Differences in physical properties:

HDPE is nontoxic, tasteless and odorless, with a density of 0.940 to 0.976g/cm3, which is the product of polymerization under the catalysis of Ziegler catalyst under low pressure, so HDPE is also called low pressure polyethylene.

LDPE is nontoxic, tasteless and odorless, with a density of 0.910 to 0.940g/cm3. It is made up of oxygen or organic peroxide as a catalyst under the high pressure of 100 ~ 300MPa, and is also a high pressure polyethylene.


The difference in chemical properties:


HDPE is a thermoplastic resin with high crystallinity and non-polar polarity produced by ethylene copolymerization. The surface of the original HDPE is milky white and has a translucent appearance on the thin section. It has excellent resistance to most of life and industrial chemicals, and it can resist corrosion and dissolution of strong oxidizing agent (concentrated nitric acid), acid base salt and organic solvent (carbon tetrachloride). The polymer has no moisture absorption and has good waterproof and steam properties, and it can be used for moisture-proof and anti-seepage applications.


LDPE geomembrane is LDPE, which is the lightest variety in PE resin. Compared with HDPE geomembrane, its crystallinity (55% ~ 65%) and softening point (90~100 C) are lower; it has good softness, extensibility, transparency, cold resistance and processability; its chemical stability is good, it can withstand acid, alkali and salt water solution; it has good electrical insulation and air permeability; water absorbability is low; it is easy to burn. Its properties are soft, and have good extensibility, electrical insulation, chemical stability, processability and low temperature resistance (-70 degrees C).


The differences in their characteristics:


The deficiency of HDPE geomembrane is that its aging resistance and environmental stress cracking are not as good as LDPE geomembrane, especially the thermal oxidation can reduce its properties. So high density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane has added antioxidants and ultraviolet absorbent to improve its shortcomings when making plastic rolls.

The disadvantage of LDPE geomembrane is its mechanical strength, moisture resistance, gas isolation and solvent resistance. The molecular structure of LDPE geomembrane is not regular, the crystallinity (55%-65%) is low, and the melting point (108-126 C) is also low. Its mechanical strength is lower than HDPE geomembrane, and its anti-seepage coefficient, heat resistance and anti Japanese photoaging are poor. It discoloration and decomposition at sunlight or high temperature, resulting in degradation of properties, so low density polyethylene added antioxidants and ultraviolet absorbents to improve their shortcomings when making plastic rolls.
